Feature events highlight Comms Connect

End-user case studies and an approved radio certifier workshop are just some of the highlights on the conference program for Comms Connect NZ, taking place in Wellington on 12–13 May.

The workshop is an introduction to the ARC regime for those interested in becoming a certifier. Topics covered will include: national and international legislation, radio licence certification rules, radio licence policy rules and licence compliance requirements.

The workshop presenters are Kevin Everitt — radio spectrum investigator, Radio Spectrum Management Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment; plus Siegmund Wieser — principal radio engineer, Licensing and Technical, Radio Spectrum Management/Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment.

Another session will see a case study presentation on how EA networks in the Canterbury region deployed a DMR network to improve safety and reduce network downtime. With 3000 kilometres of electric lines on a largely meshed network, the Network Operations Centre (NOC) needs to control safe access management and ensure both consistency of load every day and additionally support the delivery of both planned improvement projects and be prepared for unplanned events as and when they arise.

The NOC needs to support the operators in the field, engineers and design teams, safety management experts, emergency response, customers, users and retailers, all the while seeking to minimise disruption and improve access, safety management and works coordination to ensure EA Networks is safely keeping the lights on and the web connected for the circa 37,500 people needing these services every day. Operations Director Myles Connew will discuss how the DMR network has become a key tool for making this happen.
