Icom support for solar cells
Icom is supporting both the Turkish SOCRAT and the Japanese team Okinawa in the 2011 World Solar Challenge. The SOCRAT team is run by Istanbul University and Okinawa by local high schools in Okinawa.
One of the challenges faced by the teams is obtaining reliable communications that comply with ACMA legislation. As the frequency allocation of the Australian UHF CB network is unique, the team’s current radios are non-compliant.
For the race, Icom has provided use of handheld units that have been programmed to Australian UHF CB specifications. In addition, fixed mount IC-440s have also been offered to the teams. Turkish Icom distributor Telsan will be supplying accessories for the SOCRAT team, including aerials, 12 V chargers and other accessories.
The IC-440 features an all-in-one controller mic, allowing full operation from the handpiece. With the speaker also included on the handset, the main unit can be stored out of sight with the supplied quick-release bracket.
The rugged handheld units are made to commercial specifications and feature a 2000 mAh Lithium-Ion battery.
