NEC, IMDEA launch 5G joint research unit

IMDEA Networks Institute (Madrid, Spain) and NEC Laboratories Europe (Heidelberg, Germany) have formed a joint research unit (JRU) to foster multidisciplinary joint team work in 5G research and development projects.

Located at IMDEA Networks’ headquarters, the JRU public–private alliance will bring together a highly specialised team for a variety of scientific investigations.

The work will be led by Roberto González Sánchez and Andrés García Saavedra, both senior researchers from NEC Laboratories Europe, and Arturo Azcorra, Joerg Widmer and Albert Banchs from IMDEA Networks

One area of focus will be the use of artificial intelligence to improve the performance and usability of the 5G networks.

Collaborative activities will include:

  • joint participation in R&D programs and projects;
  • selection and training of personnel;
  • development of platforms, applications, services and software tools;
  • exploration and technological evaluation;
  • technology transfer activities; and
  • enhancement of R&D through internal and external programs, and research dissemination activities.

Both entities are part of the 5G Infrastructure Association, a partnership with an EU budget of €700 million devoted to R&D and innovation with the goal of developing an operational European 5G communications infrastructure by 2020.

NEC and IMDEA Networks are also actively involved in several 5G projects funded by the Horizon 2020 program, such as 5G-Transformer (NEC) and 5G-EVE (IMDEA Networks).
