Teen accesses LTE network via simple flaw

A US teenager stumbled across a simple way to gain unpaid access to T-Mobile’s LTE network, via an easy-to-fix flaw in the network’s administration.

Jacob Ajit details his experience on the medium.com website.

Essentially, Ajit accidentally determined that some websites — in this case, Speedtest.net — could be accessed across the network even using a SIM card with no credit.

It was then a short step to work out that T-Mobile’s network was simply checking off anything with a “/speedtest” folder against a whitelist.

Ajit created a /speedtest folder on his Mac and found that he could upload content over the network with no problems.

The teenager notified T-Mobile of the flaw and at the time of writing was waiting for a response.
