Radio communications for deep underwater tunnel
Zenitel Norway AS has won the contract for delivering the infrastructure, including the complete radio communication system, for what claims to be the world’s deepest road tunnel, Eikesundsambandet, in Norway.
The tunnel, with the lowest point down to 287 m under water, will require tight security and reliable communications in and around the tunnel entrances.
The radio installation will provide the tunnel and road users with full FM radio coverage, and secure, effective communication for emergency instances.
Additionally, the construction includes an alarm and surveillance system, which alerts the road traffic centre directly about any irregularities.
The company’s local partner, Nordvest Elektronikk in Kristiansund, will be responsible for commissioning the system, and carrying out a frequent service on the installation. The tunnel is due to open in January 2008.
