SigmaTel has introduced the STFM1000, the company's first FM tuner designed on an optimised radio architecture for portable multimedia devices, including MP3, portable audio/video and mobile phones.

It is a companion processor for the STMP3500 and STMP3600 families of system on chip and provides users with good FM performance.

The device digitally transmits data to SoCs, resulting in the same audio effects while listening to FM radio that a user experiences while listening to MP3.

The optimised radio architecture supports a proprietary two-wire interface for moving FM data, signal quality indicators and RDS.

In addition, the device includes a standard three-wire I2S interface to support the STMP3500 and other SoCs.

The FM tuner has high sensitivity due to its integrated low-noise RF amplifier, resulting in better FM performance as well as complex filtering to trade off fidelity for improved noise suppression under poor signal conditions.
