Sierra Wireless has launched the MC8792V, claimed to be the first embedded module to offer 3G/HSPA 900 MHz frequency band support.

The module offers tri-band HSPA/UMTS support (900, 1900 2100 MHz) and quad-band support for GSM/GPRS/EDGE networks. It allows local wireless developers to expand their products for mobile networks rolling out 900 MHz 3G/HSPA networks.

The extra development to migrate from existing frequencies to 900 MHz is minimal, as the module is designed as a drop-in swap with its existing 3G/HSPA modules.

An increasing number of network operators around the world are considering or are already using the 900 MHz frequency range in their HSPA network deployments.

The embedded module can be integrated into a variety of OEM devices, including fixed wireless terminals, routers and modems, point-of-sale devices and laptops. With simultaneous voice and data capability, integrated GPS, serial UART and integrated TCP/IP, it is suitable for developers and users wanting to target 3G/HSPA 900 MHz networks.

Key features include: tri-band HSPA/UMTS (900, 1900 and 2100 MHz) and quad-band support for EDGE/GPRS/GSM network access; peak data speeds of up to 7.2 Mbps on the downlink and 2.0 Mbps on the uplink (future upgradeable to 5.76 Mbps); support for simultaneous voice and data usage; integrated GPS, serial UART and embedded TCP/IP.
