Optical Systems Design has available the OSD8817 ultra-miniature digital optical fibre modem pair for CCTV surveillance systems. The system uses uncompressed 10-bit digital technology to provide better than broadcast quality video and one-way alarm + duplex data transmission over a single fibre.

It is also optionally available with stereo audio transmission along with the video. The transmitter module’s main features are its ability to operate over all fibre types over distances from less than a metre to more than 30 km and its flexible user-friendly data configuration with everything packaged into a metal enclosure measuring 40 x 25 x 55 mm.

The OSD8817R receiver is available as either a one- or two-channel card that plugs into the company’s standard OSD370 chassis or as a small self-contained module.

The system is intended for use in high-performance PTZ (pan tilt zoom) systems where the camera enclosure has limited space. Apart from its small size, its operating temperature range of -20 to +75°C and ability to work from power supplies from 9 to 40 VDC or 20 to 28 VAC make it easy to apply in the field.

Another useful feature is that setting up the data interface at both ends (RS422 or RS484 two-wire or four-wire) is controlled at the receiver end, which is typically in or near a control room.
