Thermocouple power sensors for power measurements

Agilent Technologies has introduced thermocouple power sensors that offer wide dynamic range in average-power measurements.

As an enhanced replacement for the 8480 series, the sensors cover a power range of -35 to +20 dBm and span a frequency range of 100 kHz to 33 GHz (model dependent).

By extending the power range down to -35 dBm, the N8480 series of thermocouple power sensors provides 55 dB dynamic range in a single sensor. Measurement speed and repeatability at low power levels has also been improved.

Each member of the series has been optimised for a specific frequency range, and all offer high measurement accuracy with good power linearity.

The series incorporates a built-in EEPROM for storing calibration factors. This feature enables automatic loading of cal factors, reducing manual input errors and increasing productivity.

An optional calibration-factor table (Option CFT) enables manual entry of cal factors, matching the performance and operation of the 8480 family of sensors. Option CFT also provides SCPI-code compatibility with the 8480 series.

The series is backwards compatible with Agilent EPM, EPM-P and P-Series power meters.

The three new sensors cover the following frequency ranges:

  • N8481A: 10 MHz to 18 GHz;
  • N8482A: 100 kHz to 6 GHz;
  • N8485A: 10 MHz to 26.5 GHz or 10 MHz to 33 GHz with Option 033.
