Monitoring and securing against theft of high-value equipment is available with the launch of a small location device that tightly integrates GPS and GSM in a secure communication framework. Developed by Trimble, the device is little larger than a white-board eraser.

Named TrimTrac, it enables automatic position reporting with a 20 m accuracy for vehicles, containers, machinery and many other high value items. A key feature of the locator is that it requires no external antenna or connections - so it is easy to conceal. It comes in a durable, water-resistant housing and weighs only about 100 g without batteries.

Power comes from four internal alkaline AA batteries which can last up to 90 days, or from an optional vehicle battery adapter module.

The low power consumption is due to both the GPS receiver and GSM modem being integrated on a single board, controlled by a common microprocessor.Users can poll the unit in real time to request current location on demand, or receive a regularly scheduled report.

The device can be configured to periodically log, but not report, current position to minimise communication costs. Programming can call for reporting on a daily or weekly schedule.
