Berkeley Varitronics Systems has announced the Beetle 5 GHz Wi-Fi receiver for 802.11a networks.

It is a handheld, low-cost instrument designed specifically for installing and maintaining 802.11a Wi-Fi networks. The calibrated receiver measures a wide range of RF spectrum from 5.150 to 5.9 GHz (low, middle and upper U-NII band).

It measures and demodulates packets from any 802.11a OFDM access point providing stats like MAC, SSID, signal strength, PER (packet error rate) as well as WEP encryption status. Its frequency range makes it suitable for wireless IT network technicians looking to install, verify, optimise and even align their 5.8 GHz antennas for point-to-point, point-to-multpoint and network backhaul.

The instrument is a passive, wireless tester so that users may study all nearby 802.11a networks 'invisibly' and accurately for true wireless measurements and features a built-in display with keypad-button interface for portable, PC-independent operation and includes Ni-MH fast charger, rechargeable batteries and SMA connection cable for 5.8 GHz AP antenna alignment.
