Critical communications for the emerging 4G/5G world

Thursday, 11 October, 2012

The critical communications PMR industry has accumulated decades of experience running mission-critical networks and has much to share with suppliers, governments and customers who might feel unsure about how resilient solutions should be built.

Two speakers at RadioComms Connect will be covering this important topic of critical communications.

Peter Clemons, managing director of Quixoticity, will be discussing winning strategies for critical communications in a time of rapid technological change in his keynote on the first day of the conference.

His speech will cover why the current best-effort mobile communications model developed by cellular operators for the mass market is no longer valid for the emerging, increasingly critical 4G/5G world of smart grids, intelligent transport systems, m-health, financial services, tolls, border patrol and M2M.

Tony Gray, regional business development director of P3 communications GmbH, board member and director of the TCCA and chairman of the Critical Communications Broadband Group (CCBG), will discuss the topic ‘Towards a broadband future: can LTE ever support the critical communications features required by users of today’s PMR technologies’ in his speech at the event.

Given increasing demand from critical communications PMR users for additional broadband data capabilities and applications such as streaming video, the industry has begun working on the potential for LTE technology to support such services in the future.

Many questions currently remain to be answered, such as:

  • Can the LTE standards be enhanced to incorporate key required critical communications functionality such as group working and direct (device-to-device) mode?
  • Will national regulators worldwide be prepared to release harmonised spectrum in prime sub-1 GHz bands for critical communications broadband services to operate in?
